We arrived in Monterey late afternoon with not a lot of time to see anything. But we did drive through Monterey, past the Naval Postgraduate School and Cannery Row, to Pacific Grove. We wanted to see a bench overlooking Monterey Bay that was sponsored by my Uncle Carroll and Aunt Marsha Doty. They are no longer with us but the bench has become a thing in my family. My sister knows it well, but this is the first time I've seen it. Unfortunately, the bench was occupied by some lady who was obviously there for the duration so we never got to see it close-up. The sponsorship elapsed and their names are no longer on it anyways. This is Pacific Grove and the aptly name Ocean View Boulevard. It really is a beautiful place; ideal for just sitting on a bench and looking out over the Bay. |

Iceplant is big here. Ever try hitting a golf ball out of iceplant? It's impossible!
Talk about houses with a view. The only way one of these houses comes onto the market is by one of the three D's: Death, Divorce or Drugs.
What a nice area.

We spent the night in Monterey, close by the airport and also a restaurant that might have been the main reason I wanted to come to Monterey. Back in 1986-88 when I attended the Naval Postgraduate School and we lived in base housing, everyone's favorite Chinese restaurant was Chef Lee's Mandarin House. I loved it. I can honestly say that it ruined Chinese food for me for the rest of my life because rarely have I found a place that's even close to Chef Lee's. So whenever I go to Monterey, I go to Chef Lee's. It's still here after all these years, and still just as good. They don't seem as crowded as they used to be, but maybe it was just a slow night. I'm glad to see they are still around.
